Creative November Year 7 is complete… and I have some thoughts. In many ways, I am so proud of my output this year. I feel physically strong (thank you, Pilates!). My personal movement vocabulary feels well-defined, and I’m very in touch with what my body needs on a given day. Without watching the tape back first, I can tell whether or not I need to keep dancing to accomplish what I want to accomplish; a “successful” improv has become a feeling more than an aesthetic assessment. In a year when I’m generally feeling pretty burnt out, my practice felt cathartic and cozy and comfortable. Maybe… too comfortable?

Year 7 (and to be honest, 2024 in general) felt like a major signal that *something* needs to change, but I’m not exactly sure what that something is yet. I know I want to get back into regular dance classes to expand my vocabulary again and challenge my now well-established tendencies. Maybe, I need to invite in a collaborative element (duets? viewer suggestions?) so I can have a conversation instead of constantly soliloquizing. Perhaps, it’s time to find a way to welcome in a broader audience, a proposition that I am not exactly sure how to achieve and that honestly terrifies me to my core. The answer could be all, some, or none of the above, but it’s clear something has got to give.

Finishing all 30 days used to be the challenge of #CreativeNovember, but after 7 years of completion, that just doesn’t feel like enough anymore. I don’t know what’s coming in Year 8 or 2025. I do know that it’s time for something different, even if it’s scary.

I’m excited to finally share the sizzle reel from the 1st performance of my solo piece, “object/subject” at the Drops in the Vase Drop-In Salon!

“object/subject” is a reflective exploration in motion and stillness of my experiences as a figure model. I’m not really sure what the next phase or home for this piece will be, but I am proud of myself for putting together this draft in a little over a month and allowing it to be what and where it is for the time being.

HALF•LIFE, a pandemic dance film

I made this piece 3 years ago, while I was still socially distancing and recovering from a shoulder injury. I was limited both socially and physically, and I wanted to convey a sense of distortion, fragmentation, and alienation from my own self image.

In a way, this is a true “Instagram film”; I utilized several filters, and I edited the whole thing in app in 30 second chunks (which @john_e_noel generously stitched together and added music to in a real editing program after the fact). It was my first time editing my own dance footage, and I fell in love with the process - even if I was doing it in the most inefficient way possible lol.

I am not really sure why I’m sharing this piece now except that (a) I hadn’t done it yet and (b) I watched it yesterday and despite some glaring imperfections, I still resonated with what I’d made. I thought she deserved to see the light of day.

Enjoy my long pandemic locks, and let me know if/where you find meaning.
